How to Type in Hindi on Mobile

Typing in Hindi on smartphones is quick and effortless once configured. You do not need third-party ad-heavy apps. Modern Android and iOS systems have built-in phonetic transliteration where typing “kaise ho” automatically renders “कैसे हो”.

Method 1: Setup Hindi on Android (Google Gboard)

Gboard is the default keyboard on Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo, and Google Pixel devices.

१

Open Keyboard Settings on Android

Open any messaging app (like WhatsApp or Messages) and tap any text input area to bring up Gboard. Tap the gear/settings icon on the top strip of the keyboard. Alternatively, go to Phone Settings > System > Languages & Input > On-screen Keyboard > Gboard.

२

Add Hindi Language & Select 'ABC →

Tap 'Languages' at the top of the menu, then tap 'Add Keyboard'. Search for 'Hindi' (हिन्दी) or select 'Hindi (India)'.

  • Select 'ABC → हिन्दी' (Hindi Transliteration) to type phonetically using English letters.
  • Optionally select 'हिन्दी' (Full InScript Devanagari) if you prefer individual Hindi letter keys.
  • Tap 'Done' to save the new keyboard.
Pro Tip: The 'ABC → हिन्दी' layout is the most popular because you can simply type 'namaste' to automatically get 'नमस्ते'.
३

Switch to Hindi While Typing

Return to any text field. Long-press the Space bar or tap the globe icon next to the spacebar. Select 'Hindi (India)' from the popup list. Now type in English, and Hindi suggestions will appear right above your keyboard.

Method 2: Setup Hindi on Apple iPhone (iOS)

Apple iOS has a native Hindi Transliteration engine built directly into the operating system.

१

Open iPhone Keyboard Settings (आईफोन कीबोर्ड सेटिंग्स)

Open the 'Settings' app on your iPhone or iPad. Scroll down and tap 'General', then tap 'Keyboard', and select 'Keyboards' at the very top.

२

Add Hindi - Transliteration Keyboard (हिंदी ट्रांसलिटरेशन चुनें)

Tap 'Add New Keyboard...'. Scroll down or use the search bar to locate 'Hindi'. iOS will offer two distinct options: 'Hindi - Transliteration' and 'Hindi - Devanagari'.

  • Select 'Transliteration' for phonetic typing (type English words to get Hindi).
  • Select 'Devanagari' if you want a full on-screen Devanagari keyboard layout.
  • Tap 'Done' in the top-right corner.
Pro Tip: Make sure you choose 'Hindi - Transliteration' rather than standard Devanagari if you prefer typing Roman letters.
३

Switch Keyboards in Any iOS App

Open WhatsApp, Notes, or Safari. Tap the Globe / Emoji icon in the bottom-left corner of the iOS keyboard to switch to Hindi. As you type phonetically, suggested Devanagari words appear in the predictive bar above the keys.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Both Android (via Google Gboard) and iPhone (via iOS 13+ native keyboard) already include built-in Hindi transliteration keyboards. You only need to enable them in your device settings.

If long-pressing the spacebar doesn't show language options, ensure multiple keyboards are enabled in Settings > Languages. You can also turn on the 'Show language switch key' option in Gboard preferences.
